Metacognitive analysis #6.
After going throughout the whole
material it is clear that SFL considers grammar as a meaning- maker resource
and it focuses on the relationship between language and its social functions.
According to this theory, the use
of language is functional, the function of language is to make meanings and
these meanings are influenced by the social and cultural context in which they
are developed and thus, SFL is deeply concerned with the purposes of language
use.
This study was developed by M. A.
K. Halliday and his point is that any piece of language calls into play all
three metafunctions simultaneously, that is interpersonal; ideational; and
textual. SFL concentrates on the analysis of written discourse. It is essential
that students know the different tools to analyze written texts and for this
purpose they must be aware of the different genres.
SFL pays a lot of attention to
the contextualization of a writing task and by this means, students are provided
with the chance of writing about things that are appealing to them. As the
communicative approach, SFL uses realistic activities based on real life
situations and this enhance students’ performances in writing.
We, as teachers, should implement
activities that enable students to operate in social contexts relevant to their
educational, social and cultural needs.
